Book Cover Makeover – The Lord of The Rings

lord of the rings a

This week the Cover Makeover challenge is the classic, The Lord of The Rings by J.R.R Tolkien. Another book we have not read (bad on us!) but we’ve seen the movies so I knew the storyline fairly well. Since mom had unearthed some photos of her trip to Mountain Lake Lodge years ago and posted some of them on another challenge, I thought some of them were perfect for this challenge.

This is the base photo - it actually ended up getting lost. I'm a little sorry about that.

I overlaid this photo of a view through the stone archways of the Lodge.

Cover Makeover is not a book this week! It’s a chocolate bar wrapper! What a challenge! I searched and searched through all mom’s past photo’s till I found one of my cousin’s birthday cake and – aha!! – I found the perfect chocolate – at least I hope so; I’ve never had chocolate before!!  Here’s the original:

National Book Lovers Day - August 9

From: National Day Calendar

NATIONAL BOOK LOVERS DAY

Celebrated each year on August 9 (and sometimes on the first Saturday in November) it is National Book Lovers Day!  This is a day for all those who love to read and National Book Lovers Day encourages you to find your favorite reading place, a good book, rather it be fiction or non-fiction, and read the day away.

Let’s step back in time for a minute:

  • The very first books used parchment or vellum (calf skin) for the book pages.
  • The book covers were made of wood and often covered with leather.
  • The books were fitted with clasps or straps.
  • Public libraries appeared in the Middle Ages.
  • Books in public libraries were often chained to a bookshelf or a desk to prevent theft.

Moving forward:

Book manufacturing’s recent development include the development of digital printing.  Book pages are printed using toner rather than ink.  The development of digital printing has also opened up the possibility of print-on-demand,  where no books are printed until after an order is received from a customer.

E-books are rapidly increasing in popularity.  E-book (electronic book) refers to a book-length publication in digital form.  They are normally available through the internet however,  can also be found on CD-ROM and other forms.  E-books are read either by computer or via a portable book display device known as an e-book reader, such as a Reader, Nook or Kindle.

Reading can be educational and informative!
