The Secret Life of Squirrels: A Love Story

Nancy Rose
Megan Tingley Books, an imprint of Little, Brown and Company, 2016

From the dust jacket, “Mr. Peanuts spends his days alone, shopping for food and working in his shed. Sometimes this makes him a little bit lonely. But one day, on a trip to the bookstore, he meets a special squirrel, and soon they are playing at the park and sharing a romantic candlelit diner. These squirrels are nuts about each other!
“Irresistible photographs of wild squirrels in handcrafted miniature settings will surprise and delight readers and animal lovers of all ages!”

If you remember during the recent Holiday season, I reviewed another squirrel book, Merry Christmas, Squirrels!, that I thoroughly enjoyed. This book is centered on Valentine’s Day and once again, it is pure delight! I am amazed at the patience the author/photographer has for her models. She is incredibly creative with the sets and the squirrel models are AMAZING! She sets up the sets outside and has her camera on a tripod inside her house to take the photos. Even though squirrels are really annoying to us cats, this book really makes me appreciate them more. The story is so cute, but, alas, it ends too soon – I wish it would go on and on. I’m holding out hope that her squirrel models will have a litter of babies soon – I would love to see a book with babies!

Rating: 4 out of 5 paws because the squirrels are smarter than cats give them credit for – and cute, too!
