Latke, the Lucky Dog
Illustrations by Tiphanie Beeke
Kar-Ben Publishing, 2014
From the dust jacket: “Rescued from an animal shelter on the first night of Hanukkah, Latke has trouble learning the house rules. Despite a series of mishaps, he is one Lucky Dog!”
Poor, sweet Latke! He gets to go to a new home for Hanukkah but does everything wrong! He worries his new family will take him back to the shelter but instead they learn to love him all the more. This is a good lesson for everyone in commitment. When you adopt an animal, they depend on you for their well-being and for you to love them even with all their flaws. Isn’t that a valuable lesson we all could learn? This story is a good way to talk about having a pet and keeping them no matter what.
The text is medium size in a rather wonky font (it’s called EatWellSkinny) so it might prove difficult for some early readers. The illustrations are soft and simply drawn but very expressive. A sweet book for any time of the year, not just for Hanukkah!
