The Christmas Bird

The Christmas Bird

Sallie Ketcham

Illustrated by Stacey Schuett

Augsburg Books, 2000

From the dust jacket, “On a frosty Palestinian evening, a small bird returns to her stable home to discover a newborn baby in the manger. Moved by the helpless infant lying in the cold, the bird inches toward a tiny fire flickering beside the manger. … In gratitude for this kindness, the infant’s mother blesses the bird with a marvelous gift.”

A Christmas story to be sure, but The Christmas Bird is also a fable of ‘How the robin got his red breast’. The author wrote the story for her children and indeed, all children will enjoy reading it. With medium sized text more experienced readers should have no problem with reading on their own. The illustrations are colorful and simply drawn; however, the eyes on the cow are amazing!!
