The Christmas Wish

Random House, 2013

From the dust jacket: “A Child. A Wish. A Journey. This is the story of Anja, both brave and kind, who sets out on an adventure to make her dream of helping Santa Claus come true. Who will help her? All the animals she meets, from a bright red cardinal to a strong horse to a gentle polar bear.

“Husband-and-wife team Lori Evert and Per Breiehagen have created a classic Nordic story illustrated with breathtaking photos (starring their daughter, Anja) that will have readers of all ages believing.”

Filled with beautiful photographs, wondrous animals and a beautiful young girl, this book is charming. Little ones will be amazed at how such a small girl can interact with a muskox and a polar bear – just warn them – don’t try this at home – or at the zoo!  While the story centers on Anja and her journey, the real star is the landscape. The photos show the cold and frozen Nordic North in all its sparkling white glory and lush evergreen trees. Read it for the story first, then go back and take a long look at the pictures – but make sure you’re wrapped up in a warm blanket with a cup of hot cocoa, otherwise you might get a chill! The text is a medium-small size and printed on white backgrounds for the most part. An enchanting book for an enchanting season.
