Just a Special Thanksgiving
Harper Festival, an imprint of HarperCollinsPublishers, 2015
From the back of the book, “Little Critter is about to have a Thanksgiving he’ll never forget. From the school play to a surprise dinner for all of Critterville, celebrate along with Little Critter and his family as they give thanks for this holiday!!”
In this cute picture book, Little Critter dresses up as a turkey for the school play – and promptly gets stage fright! He forgets what he is supposed to say and ends up singing. Bravo! Sometimes when you do scary things, you just have to muddle through and be willing to laugh at yourself! Of course Little Critter is not without wrongdoing – he sneaks into a place he shouldn’t belong – and gets caught! But at least it wasn’t too dangerous and his parents didn’t get that mad at him. The next day he and his sister help his parents prepare for the delicious Thanksgiving feast. There was one more surprise for him! After the food was done cooking, the whole family went to the community center and shared their meal with all of Critterville! Little Critter learns that some folks don’t have enough food of their own but if everybody who has food shared theirs, then everyone would eat! And, after all, that is the true message of Thanksgiving. Like those Native Americans of so long ago who shared their meals with the pilgrims, food divided is food multiplied and everyone is blessed!
I like this book a lot – it was colorful, positive and funny. It taught lessons without being obnoxious or obvious. It is a day in the life of a little boy (?) who has lots of fun! And also about my favorite holiday of the year! Mmmmm. Turkey. Gooood!
