Dear Socks, Dear Buddy

Kids’ Letters to the First Pets

Hillary Rodham Clinton
Simon & Schuster, 1998

Who knew that a cat and a dog would get so much fan mail? Apparently First Pets are usually very popular, especially with children. When Bill Clinton was in the White House the First  Cat was Socks, a black and white stray cat, and the First Dog was, Buddy, a chocolate-brown Labrador retriever. They have since been replaced by other dogs, but during their tenure they were top dog and top cat.

Socks and Buddy together have received more than 300,000 letters and emails and some of them are in this book. Kid’s letters that ask Buddy,  “I’ve heard that you’re the first dog. Does this mean you have authority over the other dogs of the United States?” and ask Socks, “How does it feel to be top cat? Do you like Buddy? Do you have press conferences with other leader cats? Where is your cat box?”  Adorable!!

The book also has plenty of photographs of the two First Pets and some background information on them. The author also writes about writing letters with the kids. The author proceeds from the sale of the book went/are going to the National Park Foundation and the publisher promised some of their portion on the profit would go to animal rescue charities.

I liked the book a lot – especially all the great photographs! I would have liked more letters from the kids and maybe a few responses, too!
