Book Cover Makeover Challenge – 1984

The Board promises – we will have a book review on Monday – BobbieSue promises to finish her book this weekend. Sneak peek – it’s by Margaret Atwood and it’s a Banned Book! Banned Book Week is coming up soon, so make sure you pick out a banned book to read and talk about it! We must band together to combat narrow-mindedness and censorship!

Anyway, the book cover makeover for this week is George Orwell’s 1984 (also a banned book – more on that later).  Toby worked on this one also!!

#9 1984

I took a photo of a skylight from a local library, copied it, turned one copy upside down and overlaid it on top to the other and changed the color scheme. Then taking another photo from the same library of a calendar monitor, I cropped it and overlaid a cropped photo of mom’s eyeball in the center. Added lettering and I was done!!

Here’s one of many of the published covers  (I love its funky typography) –

According to the ALA 1984 was challenged in 1981 in the Jackson County, Florida, School Board because Orwell’s novel is “pro-communist and contained explicit sexual matter.”

Freedom of expression is the matrix, the indispensable condition, of nearly every other form of freedom. – U.S. Supreme Court Justice Benjamin Nathan Cardozo, 1937
