3 Cat Picture Books

2254869Cat Jumped In

by Tess Weaver

Illustrated by Emily Arnold McCully

Clarion Books, a Houghton Mifflin Company imprint, 2007

Totally cute picture book of a cat that makes a mess everywhere he goes. The black tuxedo Cat jumps in an open window into a kitchen and finds his way into a garbage can and when the lady of the house finds him she yells at him “Out, out, out” and of course the garbage goes everywhere. He goes from room to room exploring, making messes as he goes. Each time the lady finds him she yells at him “Out, Cat, out!” Eventually he runs out of places to explore and ends up hiding under a table. The lady has a change of heart and calls the cat and he jumps in – to her arms and heart.

Rating 4 out of 5 paws for how a cat worked his way into the heart of a loving human.

Millions of Cats

by Wanda Gag

G. P. Putnam’s Sons, first published 1928

Mom has been wanting a copy of this book for ages but I think we won’t be getting a copy; turns out we didn’t like it enough to buy it.

There is this very old man and a very old woman, who were lonely and decided to get a cat. So the very old man goes looking for one and he comes across a valley where there are millions of cats. He can’t choose just one so he takes them all home. Well his wife is none too happy about it. So they decide to pick the prettiest one and ask the cats themselves who is the prettiest. They all say “I am” and start fighting over which one is prettier. They make so much noise the old man and woman run in the house. After a while things get quiet and they go outside and all the cats but one are gone. It seems they ate each other up. The one left over is adopted by the old man and woman and they live happily ever after.

So I didn’t like the storyline where the cats ate each other up. Any type of violence – especially against my fellow felines – even fictional – is distasteful to me so I am glad mom didn’t buy this book.

Rating: 2 out of 5 paws because the only redeeming part is the last cat standing gets adopted.

This is how millions of cats happen:

The Cat Who like Potato Soup

By Terry Farish

Illustrated by Barry Root

Candlewick Press, 2003

A story of an old man with a ginger cat who he sort of has an affection for, but not really. He feeds her potato soup every day, which she loves. Every day they get in his truck and drive around. Each morning they get up and go fishing but he fusses at her, complaining that she has never caught anything and is basically good for nothing. Then one day she gets tired of hearing it and runs away for several days. During this time he realizes just how much he misses her and one evening he comes home and finds her on the front porch. She tells him about her adventure while she was gone and they both realize how much they need and love each other.

Rating: 3 out of 5 paws for a cute story about two curmudgeons who finally realize they love each other.
