The Last Olympian,
Book five, Percy Jackson and the Olympians

Rick Riordan
Disney Hyperion Books, 2009

So here’s the story this time – The War is finally upon Percy and Olympus. The ancient god Typhon is marching across the country leaving only destruction in his path. All of the Olympus gods are fighting him trying to stop him or at least slow him down. It is up to Percy & Co. to try stop Kronos from attacking from the east and to defend not only Manhattan but Olympus as well. He makes a drastic decision to help him defeat Kronos. Will it help? (It must, because Percy has another 5 books to go!)

MAIN CHARACTERS:
• Percy Jackson, son of Poseidon, 1 one week shy of being 16 years old, looking down the barrel of the prophecy where at 16 he will make a choice that will either save or destroy Olympus; he, like Harry Potter, finds out that in the end, either he or Kronos will die
• Annabeth, daughter of Athena, maintains her love of Luke right up to the end, even though Kronos has taken over his body
• Grover, satyr, comes in from the Wild to help with the war
CONTINUING CHARACTERS:
• Tyson, Cyclops, helps out with Poseidon in his war against the titan Oceanus
• Nico, son of Hades, berates Hades until he gives in a joins the fight
• Luke, son of Hermes, fights off Kronos at the very last moment and becomes a hero at last instead of a traitor
• Clarisse, daughter of Ares, stubbornly refuses to join in the war until the almost the last moment
• Chiron, centaur, son of Kronos, stands his ground against Kronos, being very nearly killed in the process
• Kronos, father of the gods, having taken over Luke’s body makes it all the way to Olympus and almost wins the war
• Rachel Elizabeth Dare, mortal, seer, becomes the new Oracle of Delphi
New monsters/titans: drakon, Oceanus, Typhon, hyperborean giant, Prometheus

This final book of this series answers a lot of questions about the Great Prophecy, Luke’s crazy mother, Rachel Dare’s visions and her ability to see through the Mist even though she is a mortal and the complicated relationships the gods and goddesses have with their children. It is another non-stop adventure of epic proportions and is better the second time around. The ending was so good I went back and reread the last few chapters just to make sure I got everything.

Rating: 5 out of 5 paws for sheer and utter awesomeness! Now, on to the next series, Heroes of Olympus!
