Mother Teresa

Mother Teresa: Her Essential Wisdom
Edited by Carol Kelly-Gangi
Fall River Press, 2006

The book is organized by topics of quotations. In the beginning we get a brief biography of Mother Teresa. The quotes are then divided by subject, such as “A Call to Serve”, “Family Life”, and “The Gift of Life.”

Quotes I found meaningful:

  • There are many people who can do big things, but there are very few people who will do the small things. Pg 21
  •  We learn humility through accepting humiliations cheerfully. Do not let a chance pass you by. It is so easy to be proud, harsh, moody, and selfish, but we have been created for greater things. Why stoop down to things that will spoil the beauty of our hearts? Pg 62
  • God does not demand that I be successful. God demands that I be faithful. When facing God, results are not important. Faithfulness is what is important. pg 59
  • Some in our country {India} call God Ishwar. Others call him Allah. And others just call him God. Every one of us has to recognize that he created us for greater things, such as to love and be loved. Who are we to keep our people from looking for God who has created them, who loves them, and to whom we all must return one day? Pg 104
  • There is only one God and he is God to all; therefore it is important that everyone is seen as equal before God. I’ve always said we should help a Hindu become a better Hindu, a Muslim become a better Muslim, a Catholic become a better Catholic. Pg 105

Whenever I read a book of quotes by a single person I am hoping to find something intriguing, something special about that person, something that will make me want more. This is such a book and Mother Teresa is such a woman. My human told me she remembers hearing about Mother Teresa but not paying her much attention. Now that we have read of her works and her wisdom, we want more.

The book is laid out nicely with the quotes organized well and at the end the editor includes a timeline of not only Mother Teresa but of her Missionaries of Charity as well.

5-paw rating for a book we will reread again and again because wisdom never ages.
