Septimus Heap Book Three: Physik

Angie Sage

Katherine Tegan Books, an Imprint of HarperCollins Publishers, 2007

Physik is the third of the Septimus Heap series. We have the same cast of characters that we did in the previous two books, along with more new ones. In this book a sicknesse is sweeping through the Castle and Extra-Ordinary Wizard Marcia Overstand can’t seem to find a magykal cure for it. Her apprentice, Septimus, wants to learn alchemy or Physik and find the cure. But Marcia is set against it which causes Septimus to set out on his own.  Danger and excitement ensue until the last page.

Major Characters:

o   Septimus Heap, apprentice of Marcia Overstand

o   Jenna Heap, queen-to-be

New Secondary Characters:

o   Queen Etheldredda, ancient Castle queen

o   Marcellus Pye, a famous Alchemist

o   Snorri Snorrelssen, a Northern Trader

o   Aie-Aie, a creature of some sort

o   Lucy Gringe (she was briefly in the other two books, but her character is more fleshed out in this book), love of Simon Heap’s life

o   Ullr, a small orange cat with a surprise

o   Alice Nettles, customs officer at the Port and love interest of Alther

I can’t really talk a whole lot about what happens because of a very crucial event that occurs very early on in the book. Suffice it to say that the world as Septimus knows it turns on its head and he does six months worth of maturing in two days time. As a bonus, which I only discovered on this reading is the inside of the book jacket is a really cool, full color map of Septimus’ world.

My favorite character is of course, Ullr, who really reminds me of…me.  He protects Snorri and keeps her from harm much like I do with my own human, Sabina. The main difference is that Ullr is a lot more obedient that I could ever be.
